Tips for Searching

Define Your Topic:  Does it cover just business or does it veer into other areas such as sociology or science?  You may need to use databases that cover more disciplines such as JSTOR, Web of Science or Academic Search Complete.

Universal Searching:

  • You can search simultaneously across all databases on a vendor's platform. Examples:
    •  all EBSCO databases to which we subscribe (not just Business Source Complete).
    •  all content in Lexis Nexis (on its opening page).
  • You can search UW Libraries Search
    • for books and multimedia held by UW Libraries and other libraries worldwide
    • plus articles from a growing number of research databases (but not the entire Internet and not all the databases to which UW Libraries subscribes. Those would need to be separate searches).

Excel Downloading:

  • Some sources in this guide allow downloading or copying & pasting to Excel (e.g., government and other free websites).
  • Proprietary sources such as ebooks and subscription databases usually do not allow downloading to Excel.
  • There are exceptions such as Lexis Nexis for some reports.
