LC Subject Headings

LC (Library of Congress) Subject Headings are your key to finding books, certain types of online resources, documentaries, government reports, and other materials included in most academic library catalogs.  These headings are assigned by catalogers who actually look at the materials and identify the actual subject matter of the items.  Subject heading language is controlled, that is the meanings behind these terminologies are carefully defined and always in the same way.  Of course, new subject headings are constantly added in order to keep up with intellectual progress.

Learning to use subject heading links will produce more exact results than keyword searches.  One might start a search with key words, such as humane and meat, and get a few hits.  Look toward the bottom of the records and find the LC subject heading links:

Food--Moral and ethical aspects

Food industry ethics

Food of animal origin

Humane slaughter

Meat industry and trade

Sustainable agriculture

Subject headings can lead to more specific or expanded headings, helping to develop a topic.  Some other LC subject headings useful to research in Animal Studies include:

Animal experimentation

Animal rights

Animal rights movement

Animal welfare

Bioethics

Environmental ethics

Factory farms

Farms, small

Human-animal relationships

Laboratory animals

Slaughtering and Slaughter Houses --Law and legislation
