BIS 300: Interdisciplinary Inquiry (Kellejian): Library Workshop

Goals for our library workshop

  • Practice using Lucaites & Hariman's criteria to assess an image/video for its potential for iconic status and in order to prepare you for doing this with your own image/video.

  • Identify relevant search strategies and tools to aid you in finding sources on your image/video or what it represents.

  • Conduct a close read of your image/video in order to help you describe, analyze, and interpret it and work toward your preliminary analysis (OA #5)

Analyzing Images using Lucaites & Hariman's Criteria

L & H's Criteria

Evaluate these example images using L & H's criteria.  Based on those, do you think the image could be considered iconic?

Learning more about your photo or video

How or where might we able to learn more about the photo/video itself, its context, and/or its creator?

How can you approach finding and using peer-reviewed articles when your photo/video is very current? (That is, it’s too new to have generated any scholarly literature about it yet…)

Analyzing Your Image/Video

Use this worksheet to conduct a "close read" of your image or video, which will prepare you for writing about it in your paper:
