NNLM LogoThe University of Washington Health Sciences Library serves as the regional Network Office for network member organizations throughout the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest Region (NNLM PNR) including the states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

NNLM PNR staff support Network member organizations’ health information services, resource sharing, community partnerships, outreach program development and evaluation. We offer or sponsor distance and on-site training about online health resources, and provide funding to libraries and community-based partners to promote the use of quality health information. Network members and NNLM PNR staff exhibits and present about health information topics and resources for diverse professionals and community groups.

Responsibilities

Purpose of Position
Develop and implement outreach to increase health and science literacy skills and access to quality consumer health information, using National Library of Medicine (NLM) products and services, for minorities, seniors, teens, K-12 staff, low income populations or other populations that are underserved.

General Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate development of culturally and linguistically appropriate training curricula about NLM resources and tools to offer in-person and distance training for public libraries, community-based, faith-based, and K-12 organizations that reach underserved audiences and age groups, such as Native American, Hispanic and multi-cultural populations; teens and seniors
  • Make site visits to network member organizations and participate in consumer health outreach efforts by network member organizations, providing consultation on collaboration, training resources, or strategies to support health and science literacy programs in their communities
  • Foster librarians’ emerging role in consumer health by teaching and sharing information with network members about relevant topics (e.g., health literacy, patient engagement, patient education, genetic health literacy) through social social media
  • Exhibits at regional and local conferences and meetings reaching NNLM PNR target populations

  • Submits regional and local conference session proposals aimed at public libraries, K-12 institutions, and community organizations to educate and bring awareness about NLM and NIH resources

  • Promote the NNLM funding program, provide information and answer questions for interesting applicants
  • Serve as the lead staff in the RML office for scheduling and hosting national and regional distance learning continuing education webconference meetings and presentations for network members and priority audiences

Coordinate / Host:

  • PNR Rendezvous: A monthly webinar series presented by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Pacific Northwest Region. Each session focuses on various topics such as health, research, resources, librarianship, and technology for attendees to incorporate into their work.
  • PNR Partners: An intermittent webinar series showcasing the work of our funding recipients. These funded projects have provided a much needed service in the Pacific Northwest communities.
  • NNLM Resource Picks: A collaborative, bimonthly, webcast series featuring the National Library of Medicine resources to increase awareness of these resources as well as encourage their integration by libraries and other organizations to more fully serve their colleagues and communities.
