Collection Guidelines: Classics: Scope

These are the guidelines by which materials are purchased for the Classics collection of the UW Libraries (Seattle Campus).

Scope

a. Chronological

Major emphasis is on the period from approximately the eighth century B.C.E. to the fifth century C.E.  Material relating to Greece in the second millennium and the pre-historic period, Byzantine literature, and Greek and Latin literature of the Middle Ages and Renaissance are of less importance.

b. Geographical

All areas ruled or influenced by ancient Greece and Rome are represented.

c. Language

The collection concentrates on classical Greek and Latin with ancillary material in English and Western European languages. 
 
d. Format

Electronic and print monographs and serials, as well as facsimiles, microforms, and films are included in the collection.

e. Exclusions

Textbooks, manuscripts, and translations of Greek and Latin literature into languages other than English are generally not included.
