Intro to web searching

When searching the web, know that information is prioritized not on relevance to your search. It is not meant to get you to the BEST source, but to the source that is most popular, or has paid the most to get the best reach. Searching the web for specific information requires some extra controls.

 

 

A Few Helpful Google Search Operators

filetype:

This limits search results to those of a specific file type, such as pdf, doc, docx, jpeg, etc.

 

location:

This allows you to limit news sources to those from a specific location. This one only works well in google news searches.

 

site:

This limits your results to searching either a specific url (washington.edu) or a specific domain such as .gov, or .edu.
