Open Access Publishing and Public Repositories

Information on open access publishing, depositing health sciences publications in public repositories, copyright considerations, and funding agency requirements.

Open Access Introduction

There are two primary vehicles for providing open access to research articles: open access journals and public repositories. Content can be made open access with the consent of the copyright-holder.    ~See also Peter Suber's "A Very Brief Introduction to Open Access."

UW Author Discounts for Open Access Publishing

Because of UW Libraries' memberships in BioMed Central and SpringerOpen, UW authors receive discounts for publishing in these venues.

  • Within the UW IP range: when you submit a manuscript, the discount will be automatically applied.
  • Outside the UW IP range: when you submit a manuscript, select the option "I believe that I am covered by an institutional membership arrangement" on the APC Agreement page.  Then select "University of Washington" from the institution drop-down list.
