Instruction Starter Kit: Lesson Objectives

This guide gives new instructors the basic tools needed to teach an undergraduate library instruction session.

What is a lesson objective?

A lesson objective is one skill or piece of knowledge that you want students to walk away from your session knowing.  Some questions you might ask yourself to determine lesson objectives are:

  • At the end of the lesson what should a student be able to accomplish?
  • What intermediate steps will students need to complete before they can finish their assignment?

The UW Libraries and Expository Writing Program (EWP) have learning outcomes that they have developed:
