UW Campus Plans Chronology

1891 Boone and Willcox Plan
In 1891, the two-year-old State of Washington Legislature passed an appropriations bill to buy 160 acres of land on Union Bay, with views of both Lake Union and Lake Washington. The UW Land and Buildings Committee commissioned the dean of Seattle's architects, William E. Boone (1830-1921), to draw up a campus master plan. Boone's plan positioned five buildings along a curve facing Lake Washington on what would be land later occupied by the UW Hospital and the Athletic Department. Bids proved too high for its realization, and was quickly forgotten. Additional Information

1898 Fuller or Oval Plan
Plan developed by the UW Civil Engineering Professor, Albert H. Fuller (b. 1870) for the northern area of the UW Campus. It was a simple oval street on which five campus buildings were placed on the exterior.

1903-1904 Olmsted Plan #1
The UW hired the prestigious landscape architecture firm, The Olmsted Brothers, of Brookline, MA, to devise a comprehensive plan for the campus. It was done in concert with the firm's 1903 Seattle Parks Plan created for the City of Seattle. This insular plan, not focused on the magnificent mountains or lakes, was never pursued. The University had an opportunity to host the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition and the Olmsted Brothers were brought back to replan the fair's site.

1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition Plan (Olmsted Plan #2)
The Olmsteds conceived the plan to reuse  many fair buildings as later UW halls.

1914 Olmsted Plan #3
The UW asked the Olmsteds back once more in 1911 to provide direction on campus progress since the fair. This plan was discretely scuttled by a triumvirate of faculty and a regent, so as to cause the university and the distinguished firm as little bad publicity as possible.

1915 Bebb and Gould Plan
The Seattle architectural firm Bebb & Gould, itself formed only in 1914, was commissioned by the UW to provide a campus plan that would direct imminent state capital improvements. Many academic buildings were built from 1915-1940, and this document proved to be the most influential until World War II. Additional Information
