The newspapers listed here are those published in Japan. To find current American and other English-language news coverage of Japan, use the Global News Sources listed on the E-Newspapers guide.

Historic Newspapers

These are just a selection of the historic Japanese newspapers available at the UW Libraries. Check with the Japan Studies librarian for additional titles. The microfilmed newspapers are housed in the Microform & Newspaper Collections on the ground floor of Suzzallo. The printed newspapers are in East Asia Auxiliary (a storage area) and must be requested.

Japan has a vibrant newspaper scene with readership remaining high. Five newspapers are considered national in scope: Asahi Shimbun, Mainichi Shimbun, Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Sankei Shimbun and Yomiuri Shimbun. The UW Libraries has access to these newspapers via different databases. For additional information on Japanese news media see the entry on Japan in the World Press Encyclopedia.
