Immigrant Rights in Washington State: Conducting Research for Social Change

This task force is designed to immerse students in the challenges of conducting hands-on research in human rights. The 'client' is the UW Center for Human Rights, whose Human Rights at Home project is conducted in partnership with local organizations on the front lines of immigrant rights struggles. Student researchers selected for participation in this task force will be tasked with analyzing documents, conducting interviews, and producing research that our partner organizations will use to advocate for improved policies and practices.

This task force will focus on 2-3 different sets of human rights concerns occurring in the context of immigration enforcement in Washington state today. While much of this work can be conducted from Seattle, not all of it can: immigration enforcement patterns vary widely in our state, and some of the more egregious patterns target rural communities. While UWCHR has obtained documents that shed light on some of these patterns, this task force will incorporate interviews in affected communities, enabling UWCHR to draw stronger conclusions from our existing data and giving students an opportunity to understand the implications of federal immigration enforcement in different contexts.
