Strategic Alliances and Partnerships: Changes and Continuities in U.S. Foreign Policy in South Asia

Satellite photo of South Asia at night

U.S. foreign policy interests in Asia and the wider world increasingly center on the region of South Asia, particularly India but also Pakistan and Bangladesh.  In recent years, the US. has responded to global geopolitical shifts by developing an Indo-Pacific strategy aimed at seeking: a U.S. rebalance to Asia, the placement of India at the heart of a pan-Asian world and as a counter to a rising China, and the growth of alliances and partnerships to consolidate U.S. interests across a vast region stretching from the west coast of India to the western shores of the United States.  This Task Force will examine changes and continuities in U.S. foreign policy in South Asia to propose an Indo-Pacific strategy for 2020 and beyond.

Important Think Tanks

Think tanks are institutions that generate public policy research and analysis. They can be affiliated with governments, advocacy groups, universities, businesses and other organizations. Their purpose is to influence and inform public opinion and policymakers. Most in the US are nonpartisan though many do have an ideological perspective. For more information on think tanks see the entry in the Encyclopedia of Global Studies.
