JSIS 495 - Winter 2021: Task Force J: Japan’s Relations with the US and China

Japan’s Relations with the US and China

Japan is part of Asia and also part of "the West." It is increasingly being squeezed between the U.S., which provides its military security, and China, which has become its greatest trading partner and a major leader of the Asia-Pacific region. This Task Force will write a White Paper answering how the Japanese government can best devise military, economic, and foreign policies that balance its growing trade, investment, and political ties with a Rising China with its long-term military alliance and very close economic, political, and cultural ties with the United States. How can it best position itself between these two global giants?
