    U.S. Senator Watson C. Squire designated the University of Washington as a federal depository library in May 1890. In celebrating the anniversary, we take time to appreciate the collection that began that day, the primary resources of U.S. history, contemporary culture, and legal governance.

    On May 23, 2016, we celebrated 125 years of our designation as a Federal Depository Library. It was an uplifting program featuring remarks by U.S. Documents Librarian Cass Hartnett, then Dean of Libraries Betsy Wilson, and Herbert Jackson of the Government Publishing Office. We brought the library collection to light through 13 brief readings representing the various decades. We displayed an in-house commemorative exhibit (poster designed by Kate Leonard).
