Guide of resources related to the many aspects of research data management. This guide was created thanks to generous support from the UW Friends of the Libraries.

Online RDM Curricula

The following is an incomplete list of (mostly online) curricula developed for those who support researchers in their data management.

  • New England Collaborative Data Management Curriculum (NECDMC), provides a 7-module course to teach data management skills to undergraduates, graduate students and researchers, primarily in health sciences, sciences and engineering, but is adaptable to other disciplines. Modules include downloadable powerpoint lecture slides with associated activities, readings, lecture notes and case studies. Provided with a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license that allows you to share and adapt the work as long as it's cited.
  • Essentials 4 Data Support, an introductory course for people who support researchers in storing, managing, archiving and sharing their research data. From Research Data Netherlands, the course is an online, self-paced course than can be taken without registration, online with a user profile (which allows learners to comment and participate in the forums), and the full online course with a face-to-face component and certificate upon completion.
  • Data Management Short Course for Scientists, from the ESIP Foundation (in cooperation with NOAA and the Data Conservancy). Provided with a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license that allows you to share and adapt the work as long as it's cited.
  • RDMRose, coming out of the UK, a course tailored for information professionals to learn research data management.
  • Online Data Management Course from the University of Minnesota, resulting from an IMLS grant and designed for graduate students. Seven short videos are presented online, which are accompanied by in-person class meetings.  The videos and course materials are also available online for others to use.
  • DataONE Education Modules, a series of powerpoint materials that can be incorporated into individual educational modules.
  • Do-It-Yourself Research Data Management Training Kit fo Librarians, created by the UK Data Archive, Digital Curation Centre, Purdue University and the University of Edinburgh, the course providers course content, exercises (individual and group), podcasts of the original lectures and independent study assignments.

  • Databrarians.orga collaborative blog from multiple contributors who work as data librarians.
  • Data @ Libs, provides news and information related to data management provided by the University of Washington Libraries. Includes current classes, events, and other relevant information to the UW community.
  • Data Pub, a blog about "all things data" from the California Digital Library.
