Subscription Review 2024-2025 FAQ

How will I get articles from a journal after it's been canceled?

We will still have online access to the journal articles from the years that we subscribed to the journal, in addition to any older issues (backfiles) that we may have purchased from the publisher. For newer articles published after the subscription is discontinued, we remain committed to delivering those articles to you on request. Our Interlibrary Loan service will help you in finding the resources you need, when you need them.

When will these cancellation take effect?

Access to new issues of canceled journal subscriptions will stop on or around January 1, 2026. Access to canceled databases may end as early as July 1, 2025. Some cancellation dates will vary during the 2025-2026 fiscal year as subscriptions expire and are not renewed.

Which departments and programs will be affected?

We are reviewing subscriptions in all disciplines and subject areas.

Can graduate students and other researchers participate in the feedback process?

Yes, current students and researchers with a UW NetID can submit a comment using the feedback form.

What can an individual faculty member do to help?

There are several ways faculty and the campus community can help:

  • Work with your subject librarian to evaluate subscriptions for cancellation. Faculty and researcher input is valuable in helping us make informed decisions in this process.
  • Learn about and support efforts by professional organizations and others working towards finding sustainable solutions for scholarly publishing.
  • Learn about your rights as an author and what you can do to support the UW Open Access Policy.
  • Consider publisher behavior—especially in terms of pricing—when you are choosing where to publish articles, which editorial boards to serve on, and what you do with your copyright.

Who can I contact for more information?

Your subject librarian is your best first point of contact for questions about library collections and services. Questions can also be sent to SustainableScholarship@uw.edu.
