The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) provides tools and training for patent and trademark research to libraries throughout the country. These Patent and Trademark Resource Centers or PTRCs make the research tools available to the public. The University of Washington Engineering Library is designated by the USPTO as the Patent and Trademark Resource Center (PTRC) for Washington State. You may wish to read these patent and trademark guides to get started. Reference and research help staff provide patent and trademark information and research assistance. We can introduce researchers to the patent and trademark search processes, but we cannot perform searches, evaluate searches, assist with applications or dispense legal advice. This research guide includes individual guides for conducting patent or trademark searches, as well as starting points for additional research, links to inventor resources, and other helpful information.
Washington State Pro Bono legal assistance is provided by the Washington State-TILE Patent Pro Bono Hub at the Seattle University School of Law. This service is part of the USPTO Patent Pro Bono Program for independent inventors and small businesses that matches financially under-resourced inventors and small businesses with volunteer patent attorneys and agents to provide free legal assistance in securing patent protection.
