Scope

a. Chronological

No period is excluded. Emphasis is on 19th, 20th and 21st century materials.

b. Geographical

No geographic area is excluded. Geographic focus follows faculty and student interests and generally reflects the Jackson School of International Studies programs.

c. Language

Primary and secondary works are primarily in English. Materials in other languages fall under the purview of the Jackson School of International Studies areas.

d. Format

Online resources, monographs, serials, sets, manuscripts, films, screenplays, microforms, reprints and reference works are collected.

e. Exclusions

Most textbooks are excluded.

 

Location of Materials

 

  • Suzzallo and Allen Libraries are the major locations for the Human Rights collection in print.
  • Selected electronic resources are found in UW Libraries Search and in the Human Rights Research Guide.
  • Works that provide survey or introductory treatments of topics are found in the Odegaard Undergraduate Library. Many related materials are found at the Bothell and Tacoma campus libraries.
  • Government publications has extensive materials related to human rights, both domestic and international.
  • Rare books, manuscripts and historic photographs, especially those related to human rights history and figures of the Pacific Northwest, are located in Special Collections.
  • Specialized reference works are generally purchased in online format.
  • Streaming video, including documentaries on human rights, may be found using UW Libraries Search and through our subscription streaming packages. DVDs are located in the browsing collection in Suzzallo on the first floor, and in media storage, requestable through UW Libraries Search
