Tailor Your PubMed Search Experience with MyNCBI (8 min. video)

Filters group search results by areas of interest, such as Review. Filtered results with their respective counts for the current search display as links on the right side of the web page. Click on the link to display the citations grouped by that filter.

See below for directions on adding UW Online Links and Clinical Queries, Subsets and other PubMed search filters

  1. Sign in to My NCBI.
  2. Click on the Manage Filters link at the bottom of the Filters box.  Check that the "Filters for" pulldown list shows PubMed.
  3. Under Browse/Search for PubMed Filters choose from 4 categories (Popular, LinkOut, Properties or Links) or search for a specific filter.
  4. Your filter selections are in effect only when you are signed in to My NCBI.

Filter Preferences: Show UW Full Text Links

This filter adds the purple and gold UW full text journal links to PubMed in your MyNCBI view. Configuring MyNCBI to show UW holdings journal article icons requires following these steps only one time. The UW preferences should then remain and appear each time you log in.

  1. Click on MyNCBI at top right of the window.
  2. Click on 'NCBI Site Preferences' near the top right of the window.
  3. Click on 'Outside Tool' under PubMed Preferences on the left.
  4. Choose University of Washington and click the radio button to the left.
  5. Click the Save button at the top or bottom of the page.

PubMed Search Filter Preferences: Show Clinical Queries, Publication Types, Subsets, etc.

PubMed Search Filter Preferences allow you have links to PubMed searches limited by commonly used search filters.  Popular search filters include Language, Clinical Queries Categories, Publication Types, Ages, etc.  PubMed UW displays links for searches filtered to four Clinical Queries categories (Diagnosis/Narrow, Etiology/Narrow, Prognosis/Narrow, and Therapy/Narrow, Review publication type, and Subsets (Nursing Journals, Systematic Reviews).  To show the same filters on your personal MyNCBI page follow the directions below.  

Note:  those citations that are not indexed will not be included in these results. 

  1. Log in to MyNCBI.
  2. Click on the 'manage filters' link at the bottom of the Filters box on the MyNCBI homepage.
  3. Under 'Browse/Search for PubMed Filters' click the radio button to the left of 'Properties'  in Select Category section.
  4. Click the plus sign [+] next to Clinical Queries to see the list of filters available.  Select filters by clicking the appropriate boxes. 
  5. Click the plus sign [+] next to Publication Types to see the list of filters available.  Select filters by clicking the appropriate boxes. 
  6. Click the plus sign [+] next to Subsets to see the list of filters available.  Select filters by clicking the appropriate boxes.
