NIH Biosketches with SciENcv

How to create NIH biosketches using SciENcv and My Bibliography

Requirements

With the new Common Forms, creating an NIH biosketch in SciENcv requires three linked platforms: MyNCBI, ORCID, and eRA Commons. These accounts work together to provide the necessary access, identifiers, and data integration for generating a compliant biosketch.

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID)

ORCID

An ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier) is a persistent unique identifier that is used to consolidate and accurately link researchers with publications and improve the findability of their research. It also helps distinguish researchers with similar or identical names and is searchable in PubMed to find other works.

Role in biosketches:

  • Automatically add professional and educational experience.
  • Highlight relevant research output (e.g., publications, presentations) to strengthen your role.
  • Automatically inserted in the header of the finalized, certified biosketch.

Helpful links:

Whether you are creating a new account or using an existing one, make sure to link your ORCID to the University of Washington.

eRA Commons

An eRA Commons account is a unique identifier used by the NIH to manage grant-related activities, including applications, awards, and reporting. It links researchers to their roles in funded projects and ensures accurate tracking of grant participation and compliance.

Role in biosketches:

  • Connects grant activity data for current and pending support.
  • Ensures accurate association of the Principal Investigator (PI) and key personnel with NIH submissions.
  • Automatically inserted in the header of the finalized, certified biosketch.

Helpful links:

Unlike public platforms like ORCID, access to and roles within eRA Commons are provisioned centrally. Contact your department liaison to coordinate account creation or role changes. Non-UW researchers should consult their respective Office of Research or similar unit.

MyNCBI

A MyNCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) account provides access to a suite of tools and resources for managing research information, including SciENcv and PubMed. It serves as the central login for creating and maintaining biosketches and linking data from external sources like ORCID.

Accounts can be created or linked using your UW NetID by selecting More Login Options and searching for University of Washington.

Role in biosketches:

  • Used for the entire biosketch creation workflow.
  • Pulls biographical information and research output from ORCID.
  • Digitally certifies the biosketch before download.

Helpful links:

If you have an MyNCBI account (e.g., for PubMed), you will automatically have access to the SciENcv platform. If you do not see it in your dashboard, click on Customize this page and ensure SciENcv is checked.

Linking Accounts

Linking eRA Commons and ORCID

eRA Commons and ORCID accounts are linked together in the eRA Commons interface.

  1. In eRA Commons, click on Personal Profile.
  2. Click on Create or Connect Your ORCID.
  3. Complete the authentication steps to link the accounts.

Linking eRA Commons to SciENcv

eRA Commons and SciENcv accounts are linked together in the SciENcv interface (note: this can also be accessed from any NCBI page).

  1. In SciENcv or NCBI, click on the menu in the upper right corner and choose Account Settings.
  2. In the Linked Accounts section, click on Add Accounts.
  3. Scroll down to or search for "eRA Commons."
  4. Complete the authentication steps to link the accounts.
