About Dewey Data

Dewey Data is a research platform that provides access to third-party datasets across a variety of data categories including foot traffic, construction permits, healthcare, workforce, consumer behavior, and transportation. 

University of Washington faculty, students, and researchers are eligible for access and must register an individual account.

Faculty, staff, and students from the University of Washington may access Dewey Data through the following steps:

  • Go to https://www.deweydata.io/
  • Enter your @uw.edu into the “Get started” box on the Dewey platform. After that, your account will be created and you will have access.

To view a list of what is currently available on the Dewey Data platform, visit Dewey Data Partners. Sources include location data from SafeGraph and Veraset, employment data from People Data Labs and WageScape, and real estate assessment and transaction data for ATTOM. These sources may have additional terms of use to follow. New Data on Dewey

New data additions included in our institutional subscription - May 2025:

  • Global Wireless Solutions - UK mobile app data has been added! Previously US only, the UK dataset was added just yesterday.
  • Capology - Finance and salary data for professional football clubs beyond the MLS and top 5 leagues was also added yesterday.
  • Pass_by - The normal quarterly refresh was run earlier this month and visits data is now available through December 2024 in the “Jan 2025” datasets

Terms of Use

Dewey provides data for academic and non-commercial research purposes only. Users may not use data downloaded from Dewey for any non-academic or commercial endeavor.

Permitted Use: Academic research purposes only. This includes purposes encompassing teaching, research, and non-commercial institutional needs, including the right to (a) use, reproduce, distribute, perform, and display the Licensed Data in connection with teaching, conference presentations, and lectures; (b) make use of the Licensed Data in Accepted Publications; and (c) meet requirements and conditions of research grants or publishing subventions provided by government agencies or non-profit foundations, in each case, subject to the license grant and restrictions set forth in this Agreement (including, without limitation, the post-term use provisions).

Collaboration with Third Parties: In connection with any project involving the Licensed Data, Customer’s Active Personnel may not collaborate with any third party, except that Customer’s Active Personnel may collaborate with Active Personnel of a third-party university, provided that Customer’s Active Personnel do not share or provide access to the Services or Licensed Data to any Active Personnel of such university unless those individuals are Covered Researchers.

Deletion of Data (Post-Term): Immediately upon the termination or expiration of this Agreement, Customer’s Authorized Users must cease the use of, and destroy all records of, the Licensed Data and any portions thereof (including, without limitation, all Licensed Data downloaded prior to the end of the Term)

No Publication of Raw Data: For the avoidance of doubt, during or after the Term, neither Customer nor its Authorized Users shall distribute, publish, or otherwise make available the Licensed Data to any third party. Customer and its Authorized Users may only publish summary insights derived from the Licensed Data (but not the Licensed Data in raw form), subject to the terms of this Agreement.

Data Partners: Licensed Data is subject to any corresponding terms and conditions imposed by the Data Partners available at https://www.deweydata.io/data-partner-terms (the “Data Partner Terms”).

U.S. Government Matters: Notwithstanding anything else, neither Customer nor Customer’s Authorized Users may export or re-export or allow the export or re-export of the Services or any software or anything related thereto or any direct product thereof, in violation of any restrictions, laws or regulations of the United States Department of Commerce, the United States Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control, or any other United States or foreign agency or authority.

Acknowledging the Use of Dewey Data in Publications

When publishing reports or papers based on this data license, please use the following language to acknowledge the support of several entities that made the license purchase possible:

“Partial support for the purchase of the data license came from the UW Center for Studies in Demography & Ecology (CSDE).  CSDE asks that users of these UW licensed data also acknowledge the support of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development research infrastructure grant, P2C HD042828, to the Center for Studies in Demography & Ecology at the University of Washington. Additional support for this license came from support to CSDE from the College of Arts & Sciences, the UW Provost, eSciences Institute, the Evans School of Public Policy & Governance, College of Built Environment, School of Public Health, the Foster School of Business, and the School of Social Work.  Authors of reports and papers using these data are solely responsible for the content and analyses and no responsibility can or should be attributed to the funders of the license.”
