This is the research guide for HSTRY 498A, Before Roe: Reproductive Politics across the United States, 1967-1973. It provides a curated list of primary and secondary sources related to abortion legalization prior to the passage of Roe v. Wade in 1973. It is organized by state. Each state page includes links to secondary sources and a variety of primary sources (newspapers, legislative journals, oral histories, and manuscript material available in Special Collections and elsewhere). Washington State material is divided into general primary and secondary sources and manuscript material divided by specific topics. There is also a tab for national context that includes secondary sources, books, on the history of abortion and legalization. The final tab on the guide includes links to databases for those wishing to search for additional sources.
Historians generally use the Chicago Style format. For more citation info see Citing Sources.
