Search Tips for Finding Books

Use UW Libraries Search to find books.

  • Keyword - broadest type of search.  Type in a keyword or words that broadly describe your topic.  For example: fisheries, salmon, coral. On the results screen choose the Resource Type "print book" or "e-book" from the left toolbar. Try searching with additional terms to narrow your search, e.g., salmon AND Alaska, or use related terms like "anadromous fish." You can also search on environmental topics such as "freshwater biology" or wetlands. Use quotes to search for a phrase. Use an asterisk to search for plurals or word forms, e.g. environ*

  • Title - search for a specific book by title.  For example:
"Between Pacific Tides."  On the results screen choose the Resource Type "print book" or "e-book" from the left toolbar. This will eliminate any book reviews that were found.

  • Author - search for books written by a specific author. Type in the last name followed by the first name of the author in quotations.  For example: "Ricketts, Ed." On the results screen choose the Resource Type "print book" or "e-book" from the left toolbar. This will eliminate any book reviews and articles that were found.

Note down the library name and the call number -- you will need this information to locate the book:
