Southeast Asia emerged as an area of academic study following the Second World War, when its territory was defined by the military boundaries of the Southeast Asia Command.  In most U.S. scholarly institutions it comprises the land mass East of India, and South of China.  It now includes 11 countries:  Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timore Leste, Viet Nam.
