Scope

a. Chronological

We collect comprehensively across all time periods, but with an emphasis on recent publications.

b. Geographical

No geographical exclusions: materials are selected for scientific importance and relevance to UW departmental research and education.

c. Language

Primary collecting emphasis is on English and English language translations. Material in other languages is acquired primarily by departmental request.

d. Format

Journals are collected primarily in electronic format. Monographs may be in either print or electronic format. Government publications, serials (aka serial monographs), technical reports from laboratories and observatories, translations, newsletters, and magazines are collected.

e. Exclusions

The astronomy collection does not accept unsolicited gifts. Self-published material is not collected except by faculty request. Textbooks with answer keys, workbooks, study guides, computer tapes, computer diskettes, CD-ROMs, microforms, preprints, collected works and reprints, datasets, and dissertations/theses are not collected.  Popular works and biographies are acquired very selectively. Audio-visual material, star catalogs, and astronomical atlases are not collected except by departmental request.
