Resources for finding open images, videos, music, text and more

In this guide:

Scholarship is based on a scholarly conversation where researchers take an idea or question and build on the work of others to create something new.  We recognize that sometimes new scholarship may include using images, media, and texts in creating these new works. This guide is designed to help you think through openly available sources that can be used for your research or classroom teaching.

Copyright and Fair Use

To start, here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

  • Fair Use:  If you are using sources other than those listed on this guide, make sure you are abiding by Fair Use Guidelines.  See our Introduction to Fair Use for more information.

  • Licensing Your Work:  As you create your project, think about how you would like others to build on the scholarship you’ve created.  Consider adding a Creative Commons License to your work. More information on Creative Commons may be found on our Creative Commons Licenses Guide.
