Canvas: UW Libraries in Canvas

This guide is intended to help students in their Canvas courses.

The Librarian Role in Canvas

Embedded librarianship in a Canvas course can be very beneficial. In addition to providing in-person instruction sessions, librarians can also be added directly into a Canvas course under the Librarian role. A librarian in a Canvas course can extend the Libraries' reach throughout the quarter and provide the opportunity for:

  • point-of-need research guides and tutorials specifically catered to your course content
  • participation in discussion threads and further collaboration on assignments
  • information regarding helpful and relevant research tools and strategies
  • one-on-one consultations and appointment scheduling
  • assistance with citations, literature reviews, and additional library services

To learn more about adding a librarian to your Canvas course, visit the UW-IT help page on Adding Guests or Teaching Assistants.

What is the Libraries tab?

The UW Libraries tab is part of the default Canvas navigation system. It is a navigation link located on the left side of a Canvas course (commonly called the course navigation). The link connects students to a Canvas page designed to provide quick access to library resources customized for their course of study.

The Libraries tab provides direct links to the library homepage, AskUs service features, the Libraries FAQ and Find Your Librarian. An additional Resource section is mapped to the course discipline and contains links to research guides, UW Libraries branch locations, and appropriate citation styles.

Finding Libraries Information in Canvas

An easy way to find more information about the UW Libraries directly in Canvas is through the UW Libraries tab. The Libraries tab links to resources specifically for your course.

You can find the Libraries tab in your course navigation. Please view the example below:

  2. In the middle of the page, you will find items directly related to your course's discipline. These items may include a listing of research guides, specific class or subject guides, and branch libraries associated with the course's department.
  3. At the bottom of the page, you will find links to resources and services that can provide you assistant with your library or research questions. Use our AskUs service for help 24/7, browse our FAQ, or contact one of our subject librarians for further assistance.
