English as a discipline concentrates on the study of the literature written in English and the study of English language. Such study employs the methods of literary criticism, scholarship, and the mastery of the techniques of expository or creative writing. The aim is not only to recognize the inherent value of a literary work but also to increase our understanding of the culture and the society from which the literary work emanates.
