Finding Polar Expedition Accounts

The UW Libraries will have many polar expendition related books published during the late 19th & early 20th centuries. To fnd these materials use the following strategies in UW Libraries Search.

  • Search for books by individual explorers. Change search box label from "Any field" to "Author/creator" and enter the explorer's name, e.g., "shackleton ernest". This finds books such as Shackleton, His Antarctic Writings.

search example - box 1 Author/creator = shackleton ernest"

search example: box 1 Any field = antarctica; start date = 1900, end date = 1915

Search example: box 1 Subject = diaries OR correspondence; box 2 Any field = arctic expedition

To find additional published primary sources especially from the 19th and early 20th centuries, search HathiTrust, a digital library of older & out of copyright books and magazines, using the same strategies.
