History : Polar: Primary Sources

The UW Libraries will have many polar expendition related books published during the late 19th & early 20th centuries. To fnd these materials use the following strategies in UW Libraries Search.

• Search for books by individual explorers. Change search box label from "Any field" to "Author/creator" and enter the explorer's name, e.g., "shackleton ernest". This finds books such as Shackleton, His Antarctic Writings.

• Search for books on the regions published during a specific date range. This search finds books such as The Home of the Blizzard : Being the Story of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914 (1915)

• Use special search terms that designate primary sources. Change the search box label from "Any field" to "Subject" and use one of these terms -- sources, "personal narratives", correspondence, diaries -- along with your topic/region(s). This search finds books such as Arctic Ordeal: The Journal of John Richardson, Surgeon-Naturalist with Franklin, 1820-1822
