ALA Bulletin/American Libraries

Official publications of the American Library Association

You can find ALA conference proceedings and reports from the various divisions of ALA from 1907-2018.  Note that this publication has changed its title over the years:

  • 1907-1938, Bulletin of the American Library Association;
  • 1939-1969, ALA Bulletin;
  • 1970-present, American Libraries.

Library & Info Science Databases

Both of these databases cover library literature back to 1969. To find articles that are older, try UW Libraries Search.

UW Libraries Search

The UW Libraries has a large collection of historical materials related to library science in the United States, going back to the 19th century. Use UW Libraries Search to search our collections.

Things to keep in mind:

* Terminology has changed over time, so brainstorm about how your value might have been expressed in a different era;

* Many older books are shelved off-site (the location will be Auxiliary Stacks). You can request these items and pick them up - this page provides info on the delivery schedule for off-site items. If you request items to be delivered to Suzzallo/Allen before 2pm, they are usually available on the same day.

* Only a fraction of UW's collection of historical library documents has been digitized and UW Libraries' scanning service typically cannot scan the entirety of a book. In some cases, a digitized copy might exist outside of UW, so try Googling or searching in HathiTrust. You can always request scans of articles that aren't available online.
