The major interests of the core faculty of the Department of Linguistics lie in grammatical theory (syntax, phonology, semantics), phonetics, sociolinguistics, computational linguistics, and language acquisition theory. The department 's mission statement also declares the aim to foster "the study and preservation of Northwest indigenous languages and American Sign Language (ASL) through teaching and research".

Reflecting the interdisciplinary affinities of Linguistics at UW, the department has adjunct faculty with appointments in departments such as: Anthropology, Asian Languages & Literature, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, English, French & Italian Studies, Near Eastern Languages & Civilization, Psychology, Slavic Languages & Literatures, Spanish & Portuguese Studies, and Speech & Hearing Sciences, as well as the Information School and the Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences.
The UW Department of Linguistics does not have programs in language pedagogy or applied linguistics. The Master of Arts for Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (MATESOL) degree is administered through the Department of English. The Second and Foreign Language Teaching (SFLT) Graduate Certificate program is administered by the Graduate School. Speech and language pathology programs are in Speech & Hearing Sciences.
