SCAND 155 - Danish Literary and Cultural History - Winter 2019: Online Encyclopedias: Beyond Wikipedia

About Encyclopedias

Encyclopedias are a good starting point for research, especially if a topic is unfamiliar, since they summarize background information on a topic. This can be useful not only for gaining insight into critical contextual information, but also for identifying names of significant figures or institutions, as well as terminology (keywords) for important trends, concepts, events, etc. These names and terms can be used for more in-depth searching on a topic. Some encyclopedia articles may also include bibliographic references to books or articles that go into more depth.

Note: encyclopedias are good for establishing a foundation of knowledge from which to begin research, but are not generally appropriate for citing in a research paper due to their general nature.

The links below demonstrate the wide range of electronic encyclopedias available to UW users. Clicking the link will take you to the article in that encyclopedia that specifically deals with Denmark or the Danes.
