Generally, the best way to find books and e-books is to use UW Libraries Search. To find articles, use bibliographic databases instead. Searching in UW Libraries Search will locate books in both the UW Libraries and in our partner libraries in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. After logging in with your UW NetID, you can request print books for pickup at a circulation desk, or access e-books directly in your web browser.
Keyword search: The default search (Any field in the drop-down box) will search everywhere in the item's catalog record: title, author, subject, abstract/summary and contents listing. General keyword searches can be useful with the default search, but can also result in an overwhelming number of results. Selecting Subject from the drop-down menu will limit your search to the subject field of the catalog record. This is a good way to limit your search results to books about Denmark; using the default search may result in books published in Denmark but not necessarily about Denmark. You can combine terms with boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), for example:
Material Type: Limit your search to books, e-books, or other formats. Be aware that if you use the catalog to search for articles, you will miss a lot since most available articles are not listed in the library catalog. Use bibliographic databases to find articles instead.
Show Only: The default (Articles, Books, and More) will search across books and articles. Limiting to other locations will eliminate articles from your search. The catalog can search UW Libraries only, some individual library units (Bothell, Tacoma, Law), or UW Libraries and Summit. Summit items are not held in UW libraries, but belong to libraries at other institutions in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho and can be checked out and requested by UW borrowers.
