SCAND 155 - Danish Literary and Cultural History - Winter 2019: Bibliographic Databases

About Bibliographic Databases

Bibliographic databases collect and organize references to published literature within a particular discipline or in a particular format, and are generally the best tool for finding scholarly articles but also include references to non-scholarly articles, books, book chapters, newspaper articles, etc. Keep in mind that a source need not be scholarly (i.e. peer reviewed or published in a scholarly publication) to be useful in scholarly work. It is important to keep discipline in mind when selecting a database; a science database will not be particularly useful when researching literature, for example. Links in bibliographic databases often provide direct access to full text; if not, look up the journal or book title in UW Libraries Search for access.

Databases for Research on Danish Topics

The databases listed below include international coverage of various topics. Select a database that aligns with the discipline of the topic you are researching. For example, use MLA International Bibliography for literature or Education Source for education. If you are not sure where to start, Academic Search Complete is a good database since it is cross-disciplinary. You might want to try searching different databases as well; for example, if researching film adaptations of Andersen's tales, MLA International Bibliography (for literature) and Art Full Text (for film) may both be appropriate.

To find databases for more disciplines than those listed here, see the More Resources page.
