DMPTool: Introduction to DMPTool

DMPTool is an online tool to assist in writing data management plans.

What is DMPTool?

DMPTool is a free, open source application for researchers writing data management plans (DMPs). Many funding agencies and institutions now require researchers to create DMPs for their research projects. DMPTool offers the flexibility for researchers either to complete funder-provided DMP templates or to develop their own generic DMPs.

What can I do with DMPTool?

DMPTool allows users to create, edit, and request reviews of their DMPs all in one interface. Users can create a generic DMP customized to their research or use one of over 40 DMP templates from various funding agencies and institutions including the NSF, NIH, and NOAA . Explore the complete list of funder templates.

DMPTool also allows users to:

  • Create and edit DMPs with collaborators
  • View best practice guidance during writing
  • Export their final plan in various formats
  • Register their DMP with a DMP ID and ORCID

What will I find in this guide?

  • Create a New Plan - Learn how to register for a DMPTool account and begin writing a DMP independently or with collaborators and best practice guidance support.
  • Finishing Your Plan - Understand how to download your plan as well as when and how you can register your plan for a DMP ID.

Where can I go for help?

Contact the Research Data Services librarian for questions about your DMP or to schedule a consultation about using DMPTool.
