Nansen bushū bankoku shōka no zu

Keichō [Kyoto]: Buntaiken Uhē, 1710
Map, 118 x 144 cm
Woodblock print

East Asia Library Collection
G7801.E47 S67 1710

This is a world map that demonstrated Nansenbushū (Jambudvipa), the realm where ordinary human beings live in Buddhism. With Shumisen (Sumeru, the holy mountain which is considered as the center of the world in ancient India) in the center, Naniwashi put Tenjiku (India), China, and Japan on the map. Naniwashi tried to produce a modern Buddhist world map by combining this traditional worldview with the Western worldview. In fact, Europe is on the upper left of the map and the United States on the south of Japan, both drawn as small islands.
In the afterword at the bottom of the map, Naniwashi wrote that this map’s intention was not to simply reproduce the geographical factors, but to reproduce the worldview of Buddhism. The list found on top of the map consists of references used in the production of this map.

Naniwashi was a monk who lived during the middle of the Tokugawa period. He was also known as Sōshun and Hōtan. He produced numerous scholarly works as the leading priest of the Kegon Sect in early modern Japan.
