UW Libraries: Collection Goals

The UW Libraries is committed to providing convenient and timely access to collections and information resources that are outstanding with respect to their quality, depth, diversity, format and currency to support the research and teaching missions of the University of Washington.

Subject Definition

Earth and Space Sciences seeks to understand the Earth, the solar system, and their histories. The scope of study includes the traditional disciplines of physics, chemistry, biology, geology, and mathematics, providing a foundation for interdisciplinary study that is focused on the geologic record and the rigorous observation and modeling of Earth's present state. Areas of research include earth's interior structure, chemistry, motion, and dynamics; geologic hazards; processes affecting the surface environment; the surrounding space environment; planetary processes; and geobiology. Departmental research aims to provide a basis for making accurate predictions of future conditions.

 

Subject Classification

Library of Congress Classification (LC):

  • Zonal climatology and hydrologic data is represented in the QE schedule.
  • Meteorology and climatolgy is classifed as QC 851-859.

Dewey Decimal Classification (Dewey materials are all located in remote storage):

  • The classification number for atmospheric physics and chemistry, climatology, cloud physics, and meteorology is 551.
