American libraries use official terminology (subject headings) created by the Library of Congress (LC) to categorize books by subject. UW Libraries Search, HathiTrust and the Internet Archive all use these Library of Congress terms. You may want to use subject headings when ordinary keyword searching finds too many irrelevant results. Keep in mind that some technologies will have more relevant subject headings than others. Here are some that may be useful when you search for books. The last column lists some broader subject headings that may be useful.
telephone |
sound recordings |
motion pictures |

Additional subject headings: mass media and children; mass media and teenagers; mass media and youth; mass media political aspects; mass media social aspects; violence in mass media; mass media censorship; mass media law legislation |
