Indigenous Studies Journals
These are a sampling of journals that focus on indigenous studies available at the UW Libraries or freely available on the Web.
- Aboriginal Policy Studies APS is a "peer-reviewed and multidisciplinary journal that, on a bi-annual basis, publishes original, scholarly, and policy relevant research on issues relevant to Métis, non-status Indians and urban Aboriginal peoples in Canada"
- American Indian Quarterly As the journal of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association, Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) is based in North America but seeks to bridge the distances across the Indigenous world. The editors of NAIS are committed to creating a dynamic intellectual space for the communication and dissemination of excellent scholarship related to Indigenous Studies. - Australian Aboriginal Studies "AAS is a quality multidisciplinary journal that exemplifies the vision where the world’s indigenous knowledge and cultures are recognised, respected and valued. It encourages contributions that articulate the ways in which research approaches and methodologies are underpinned by ethical decision-making."
- Australian Journal of Indigenous Education AJIE is an "internationally refereed journal which publishes papers and reports on the theory, method, and practice of Indigenous education."
- Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education & Society Peer-reviewed journal that "solicits any work purposefully engaged in the decolonization process, regardless of discipline or field, encouraging work that actively seeks undisciplinary connections that work both against and beyond the Western academy."
- Études Inuit Studies "Études Inuit Studies, a semi-annual scholarly journal... is devoted to studying traditional and contemporary Inuit societies from Greenland to Russia from a broad social science and humanities perspective." Earlier issues available via JSTOR.
- Indigenous Peoples' Journal of Law, Culture, & Resistance "The Indigenous Peoples’ Journal of Law, Culture & Resistance is a student run law journal publishing writings concerning Native Peoples’ cultures, traditions, and histories. In so doing the Journal promotes Native scholarship and seeks out publishable material from the traditional perspective as well as the intellectual in order to bring attention to specific situations and legal battles facing Native communities."
- Indigenous Policy Journal IPJ "publishes articles, commentary, reviews, news, and announcements concerning Native American and international Indigenous affairs, issues, events, nations, groups and media."
- International Indigenous Policy Journal IIPJ is a peer-reviewed, policy-relevant research journal addressing issues pertaining to Indigenous Peoples throughout the world.
- International Journal of Critical Indigenous Studies Peer-reviewed journal that "disseminates scholarship across the Humanities, Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Law and Education in the field of Indigenous Studies."
- International Journal of Indigenous Health IJIH is a peer-reviewed journal that "was established to advance knowledge and understanding to improve Indigenous health. The Journal seeks to bring knowledge from diverse intellectual traditions together with a focus on culturally diverse Indigenous voices, methodologies and epistemology."
- Journal of Indigenous Research. "The focus of this publication is to obtain articles about research conducted with Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian, Maori populations- written for laypeople - and approximately 1500-2000 words."
- NAIS (Native American and Indigenous Studies Association) AIQ is "a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary journal of the anthropology, history, literatures, religions, and arts of Native Americans." Earlier volumes available via JSTOR
- Native Studies Review "The journal’s mandate is to feature original scholarly research on Aboriginal perspectives and issues in contemporary and historical contexts. As a multidisciplinary periodical, it publishes articles dealing primarily with a Canadian focus but welcomes submissions with an international focus."
