Maid Adams joined Seattle CORE in 1962. She served as coordinator of negotiation teams for equal employment at grocery and department stores. She helped publish and distribute the booklet on Negro pioneer George Washington Bush. She was co-principal of the Freedom School project at the First AME Church. Maid accepted the need for Black self-determination in CORE’s last days and moved on to work on the United Farmworkers Union grape boycott. She returned to the University of Washington to earn her Masters degree in educational psychology and then served for twenty years as a program director at Green River Community College. She continues to teach and maintain community activities.

Jean Durning joined Seattle CORE in 1961. She helped lead CORE’s campaign to integrate the Bon Marché, organized the Seattle demonstration to coincide with the March on Washington, and served on the CORE Emergency Committee. Thereafter she was active in political campaigns, taught junior high school and coordinated studies at the Human Environment Foundation on minority students entering environmental and natural resource careers. From 1981 to 1993 she was northwest director of The Wilderness Society during the height of controversy over ancient forests— helping coordinate volunteers of many environmental organizations, lobbying Congress, and dealing regularly with government agencies and with press and broadcast reporters. Early in her retirement, she volunteered at Seattle Central District elementary schools.

Joan Singler, college student and mother-to-be in 1961, helped to found Seattle CORE. While raising two daughters, she served as CORE secretary and chaired the Housing Committee. Moving to San Francisco in 1965, she led the San Francisco Women for Peace in a boycott against Dow Chemical, producer of napalm used in the Vietnam War. Upon returning to Seattle, she earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Washington, and volunteered on behalf of the Farm Workers Union for better working conditions. In 1976 Joan was a key leader in Marvin Durning’s campaign for governor of Washington. She has also volunteered on behalf of victims of domestic violence, and presently is a legislative liaison for Washington State AARP.

Bettylou (Burleigh) Valentine, a national board member of the NAACP, came to Seattle for graduate school in 1959. Here she became active in CORE. She helped organize the UW campus Civil Rights Action Group (CRAG) after university administrators refused to allow an NAACP chapter. After graduation she and her husband moved to Washington University in St. Louis, and became active in the St. Louis CORE chapter. They later researched an urban American ghetto, an experience described in her book Hustling and Other Hard Work. Thereafter the Valentines taught, researched, and wrote, in and about Suriname, Papua New Guinea, and 1980’s China. For sixteen years before she retired, Bettylou directed a youth and family service organization in Seattle’s Central Area.

Seattle is a music town with rich, deep roots that have influenced the culture and identity of its civic life for decades. In a society that appreciates music but is ambivalent toward the profession of making it, the importance and contribution of Seattle's musicians have been routinely overlooked in historical accounts of the city.
