Omeka: Exhibits

Omeka is a free, flexible, and open source web-publishing platform for the display of library, museum, archives, and scholarly collections and exhibitions.

How are exhibits different than simple pages?

Exhibits are an opportunity to highlight a few items from a single collection or to put items from several collections in conversation with one another. Exhibits provide a way to bring items from an Omeka site together in conversation with one another through descriptive text. Simple pages can be added to describe your project as a whole in more detail. They become part of the overarching site navigation.

How to create exhibits

To get started using Exhibits on your site, take a look at the UW Omeka Guide's Exhibit section. The guide includes how to:

  • Add the Exhibit Builder Plug-in: to start using exhibits on your Omeka site, you will first need to set up the Exhibit Builder.
  • Create an Exhibit: Steps to start creating exhibits for your site, including the metadata needed to describe your exhibit.
  • Add pages to An Exhibit: Instructions for adding additional exhibit subpages to take a deeper dive into your topic and put objects from your collections in conversation with one another.
