Plague Doctor
Often quarantined from the general public, Plague Doctors served as public servants during epidemics, starting with the Black Death in the 14th century. The beak would hold dried flowers, herbs, spices, or vinegar to keep fend off bad smells which were thought to pass along illness. Image available through Wikimedia Commons
