Hiromi Lorraine Sakata is an ethnomusicologist whose work focuses on South Asian music and musicians. She taught ethnomusicology at the University of Washington for twenty years before joining the UCLA faculty as professor of ethnomusicology. She is the author of Music in the Mind: The Concepts of Music and Musician in Afghanistan (Kent State University Press, 1983) as well as the producer of Ustad Mohammad Omar: Virtuoso from Afghanistan (Smithsonian Folkways, 2002). Her most recent publications focus on devotional music in Pakistan, in particular, the music at Sufi shrines.
The Hiromi Lorraine Sakata collection contains field recordings created by Sakata in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan. The collection includes audio and video recordings of musical performances as well as lectures and thesis papers.
