Robert Kauffman was an ethnomusicologist, teacher, and author from the United States. From 1960-62, he did fieldwork in Rhodesia (modern day Zimbabwe) collecting mbira recordings. In 1971, he graduated with a PhD from UCLA for his dissertation entitled "Multi-Part Relationships in the Shona Music of Rhodesia". During his career in academia, he was a professor of ethnomusicology at the University of Washington and the University of Pittsburg.
The Robert Hauffman collection contains field recordings created by Hauffman during his research. The recordings were created in Zimbabwe, Spain, and Curaçao, an Island in the Dutch Caribbean.
