How Trust Works : The science of how relationships are built, broken, and repaired by Peter H. KimFrom the world's leading expert on trust repair, a guide to understanding the most essential foundation of our relationships and communities. When our trust is broken, and when our own trustworthiness is called into question, many of us are left wondering what to do. We barely know how trust works. How could we possibly repair it? Dr. Peter H. Kim, the world's leading expert in the rapidly growing field of trust repair, has conducted over two decades of groundbreaking research to answer that question. In How Trust Works, he draws on this research and the work of other social scientists to reveal the surprising truths about how relationships are built, how they are broken, and how they are repaired. Dr. Kim's work shows how we are often more trusting than we think and how easily our trust in others can be distorted. He illustrates these insights with accounts of some of the most striking and well-known trust violations that have occurred in modern times and unveils the crucial secrets behind when and why our attempts to repair trust are effective, and which breaches of confidence are just too deep. How Trust Works transforms our understanding of our deepest bonds, giving us the tools to build strong and supportive relationships on every level. With our families, coworkers, and friends. With the groups, organizations, and institutions that touch our lives. And even with societies and nations.

Why We Doubt by N. Ángel PinillosThis book, the first of its kind, puts forward a novel, unified cognitive account of skeptical doubt. Historically, most philosophers have tried to tackle this difficult topic by directly arguing that skeptical doubt is false. But N. Ángel Pinillos does something different. He begins by trying to uncover the hidden mental rule which, for better or worse, motivates our skeptical inclinations. He then gives an account of the broader cognitive purpose of having and applying this rule. Based on these ideas, he shows how we can give a new response to the traditional problem of global skepticism. He also argues that philosophical skepticism is not just something that comes up during philosophical reflection, as David Hume, Charles Sanders Peirce and other philosophers have urged. Instead, it is of great practical significance. The rule which produces skepticism may itself be operative in certain pathologies such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, in creative endeavors, and in conspiratorial thinking. The rule can also explain some of our reluctance to trust statistical evidence, especially in legal settings. More broadly, this volume aims to breathe new life into a classic problem in philosophy by tackling it from a new perspective and exploring new areas of application. The book will be of interest to philosophers, psychologists and anyone interested in the human capacity to doubt and to question our beliefs.

A Social Psychology of Protest by Jacquelien van Stekelenburg; Bert KlandermansProtest is typically rare behavior, yet the first decade of the twenty-first century has been named the era of protest. Successful protests bring masses to the streets, and the emergence of social media has fundamentally changed the process of mobilization. What protests need to be successful is demand (grievances, anger, and indignation), supply (protest organizations), and mobilization (effective communication networks). Motivation to participate can be instrumental, expressive, and identity driven, and politicized collective identity plays an important role in the dynamics of collective action. This volume brings together insights from social psychology, political psychology, sociology, and political science to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of protest participation, particularly to the question of why some people protest while others do not. It is essential reading for scholars interested in the social and political psychology of individuals in action.

Boredom by Elena CarreraThis Element challenges prevailing views of boredom as a modern phenomenon and as an experience occurring inside our minds. It discusses the changing perspectives on boredom within psychology, psychiatry and psychoanalysis on both sides of the Atlantic in the last 100 years. It also analyzes visual and textual material from France, Germany, Britain, Argentina and Spain, which illustrates the kinds of social situations, people and interactions that have been considered tedious or boring in the past five centuries. Examining the multidirectional ways in which words like ennuyeux, 'tedious', langweilig, aburrido and 'boring' have been transferred between different cultural contexts (to denote a range of interrelated feelings that include displeasure, unease and annoyance), it demonstrates how the terms, concepts and categories through which individuals have experienced their states of mind are not simply culture-bound. They have also travelled across geographical and linguistic barriers, through translation, imitation and adaptation. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Narrative and Grief : Autoethnographies of Loss by Deleasa Randall-Griffiths (Editor, Contribution by); Patricia English-Schneider (Editor, Contribution by)Grief and loss are fundamental aspects of the human experience. Narrative and Grief examines the desire to make sense out of the nonsensical by exploring specific stories of loss and grief, spanning from the loss of a parent, child, or partner, loss within larger family systems; and ambiguous and anticipatory loss to broader cultural aspects of grief. The autoethnographic essays in this book reflect on the unique and individual experiences of each contributor's story. Simultaneously, these essays reveal that although each grief experience is unique, it is also collective, evoking broader cultural themes related to loss and grief. Scholars of communication, sociology, and family studies will find this book of particular interest.

Cultural Perspectives on Shame : Unities and Diversities by Cecilea MunEach essay in this volume provides a cultural perspective on shame. More specifically, each chapter focuses on the question of how a culture can differentially affect experiences of shame for members of that culture. As a collection, this volume provides a cross-cultural perspective on shame, highlighting the various similarities and differences of experiences of shame across cultures. In Part 1, each contributor focuses primarily on how shame is theorized in a non-English-speaking culture, and addresses how the science of shame ought to be pursued, how it ought to identify its object of study, what methods are appropriate for a rigorous science of shame, and how a method of study can determine or influence a theory of shame. In Part 2, each contributor is primarily concerned with a cultural practice of shame, and address how shame is related to a normative understanding of our self as a person and an individual member of a community, how culture and politics affect the value and import of shame, and what the relationship between culture and politics is in the construction of shamed identities. Cultural Perspectives on Shame will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working in cross-cultural philosophy, philosophy of emotion, moral psychology, and the social sciences.

Sex and Sexuality: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. a Sex Therapist's Perspective by Ami RokachHuman sexuality touches all of us, pun intended. We all either enjoy it, struggle with it, or may have been its victims. Humanity has dealt with this central issue for decades, and we still continue to learn as science and research are progressing and developing. When discussing sexuality, we mean human sexual functioning, the physiology of sex, the hormones involved and how they affect us, and the cultural norms related to it. However, when sex is not functional it is a problem that can affect us in significant ways. This book will describe and explore its causes and the reasons that those dysfunctions are maintained, and what treatment methods have been proven successful. Amongst its other contributions, this book will place sexuality where it belongs: within the context of relationships, and will demonstrate how it is related to intimacy and may enhance it, how it may be negatively influenced by destructive relationships, and how dysfunctions or paraphilias may influence the intimate union. This book covers issues, angles, and points of view which are not commonly covered in sex books for the general public, replete with recent and updated information.

Troubling the Water : The Urgent Work of Radical Belonging by Ben McBrideCan you imagine a future that includes your enemies? If not, what happens next? From one of the most courageous and visionary leaders of our time comes Troubling the Water, an immersive book about the violence and injustice that threaten to drown us all. Activist Ben McBride recounts how he first waded into the water: from the Kill Zone in Oakland, where he moved with his young family, to the uprising in Ferguson, to the moral impoverishment of the white evangelical church. In the truth-telling tradition of Bryan Stevenson and Bishop William Barber, McBride leads us right into the fury and fragmentation of our moment, and then steadies us once we're there. What would it take to truly belong to each other? Radical belonging, McBride argues, means looking at our implicit biases, at our faulty understandings of power, and at how we "other"--or "same"--people. Sometimes it even means troubling the waters--speaking hard truths in situations that appear calm but that cloak injustice. With a blend of provocation and good humor, McBride leads us beyond inaction on the one hand and polemic on the other. What results is an indelible manifesto--a troublemaking reverend's call to the most urgent task of our time. As inequality, racism, and alienation weaken our common life, well-meaning people ask: What do I need to do to create a world where all can belong? But McBride asserts that instead, we need to ask: Who do I need to become? Building a shared humanity is hella messy. "Peacemaking" sounds cloying and staying apart seems safer. But unless we want violence to intensify, we are running out of options. In this unforgettable book, McBride reminds us that wading into conflict and stirring up truth is the only way to find real healing.

The Social and Political Psychology of Violent Radicalism by Serge Guimond; Armelle NugierThis book provides a unique perspective on the perpetrators and victims of political violence, using original evidence from the deadly attacks perpetrated in Paris in 2015. Much of the current literature focuses on the perpetrators of such violence. This volume, however, offers a deeper analysis by focusing not only on the terrorists themselves but on understanding the reactions of the general population affected by such lethal acts. It provides a more detailed view of the opponents of terrorism, namely us, and explains how our own reactions can increase or decrease, the potential for political violence. Part I introduces the most relevant theories within social psychology and political psychology that are used to understand terrorism; Part II examines empirical evidence from a French context; and Part III discusses policy implications, with the prevention of political violence as a long-term goal. Finally, the volume offers a blueprint for a more appropriate conceptualization of terrorism as arising out of intergroup conflict suggesting ways to build a resilient society. This book will be of interest to researchers, teachers and students across social psychology, sociology, political psychology and political science.

The Fair Process Effect : Overcoming distrust, polarization, and conspiracy thinking by Kees van den BosThe Fair Process Effect aims to shed light on why there are so many instances of distrust, polarization, and conspiracy thinking in our world and what we can do about this. The book focuses on the fair process effect as a mechanism that may help to start overcoming these important issues of societal discontent. This is a positive effect that people exhibit when they have been treated in genuinely fair and just ways by fellow human beings and societal authorities. Current insights presented in the book aid the understanding of why people may experience discontent, distrust, and disillusionment. Furthermore, these insights can be used to start countering exaggerated levels of distrust, heightened polarization, and unfounded conspiracy thinking. Lived Refuge : Gratitude, resentment, resilience by Vinh NguyenA free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. In a world increasingly shaped by displacement and migration, refuge is both a coveted right and an elusive promise for millions. While conventionally understood as legal protection, it also transcends judicial definitions. In Lived Refuge, Vinh Nguyen reconceptualizes refuge as an ongoing affective experience and lived relation rather than a fixed category with legitimacy derived from the state. Focusing on Southeast Asian diasporas in the wake of the Vietnam War, Nguyen examines three affective experiences--gratitude, resentment, and resilience--to reveal the actively lived dimensions of refuge. Through multifaceted analyses of literary and cultural productions, Nguyen argues that the meaning of refuge emerges from how displaced people negotiate the kinds of safety and protection that are offered to (and withheld from) them. In so doing, he lays the framework for an original and compelling understanding of contemporary refugee subjectivity.

Forced Migration and Separated Families by Marja Tiilikainen (Editor); Johanna Hiitola (Editor); Abdirashid A. Ismail (Editor); Jaana Palander (Editor)This open access book examines the impacts and experiences of family separation on forced migrants and their transnational families. On the one hand, it investigates how people with a forced migration background in Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America experience separation from their families, and on the other, how family and kin in the countries of origin or transit are impacted by the often precarious circumstances of their family members in receiving countries. In particular, this book provides new knowledge on the nexus between transnational family separation, forced migration, and everyday (in)security. Additionally, it yields comparative information for assessing the impacts of relevant legislation and administrative practice in a number of national contexts. Based on rich empirical data, including unique cases about South-South migration, the findings in this book are highly relevant to academics in migration and refugee studies as well as policy-makers, legislators and practitioners.

Memory, Trauma and the Spirited Life by Gillian BurrellMemory, Trauma and the Spirited Life offers a unique understanding of memory's role in developing as a person, in navigating the course of life, and in mitigating emotional pain. This book develops the idea that memory, by what it endows, requires work of us that entails responsibility: to the self, the other, to the planet and to the living and the dead. Discussing the concept of memory and what it provides from the ancients to the present, Burrell draws on such writers as E. M. Forster and Rosa Luxemburg, Walter Benjamin, Tzvetan Todarov and Edward Said, as well as Susan Rubin Suleiman and Paul Ricoeur, to explore the operation of cultural and collective memory, trauma, otherness and the possibility for forgiveness. By means of richly detailed clinical vignettes, the author provides a psychoanalytic perspective to illustrate the transformative power of memory in coming to terms with the past, thereby making it essential reading for psychoanalysts and psychotherapists in practice and in training, as well as those with interests in history, literature, identity, the treatment of trauma and the question of hope.

Empire of Normality : neurodiversity and capitalism by Robert Chapman'Groundbreaking ... [provides] a deep history of the invention of the "normal" mind as one of the most damaging and oppressive tools of capitalism. Beyond simplistic narratives of normativity and difference, this groundbreaking book exposes the very myth of the 'normal' brain as a product of intensified capitalism. Exploring the rich histories of the neurodiversity and disability movements, Robert Chapman shows how the rise of capitalism created an 'empire of normality' that transformed our understanding of the body into that of a productivity machine. Neurodivergent liberation is possible - but only by challenging the deepest logics of capitalism. Empire of Normality is an essential guide to understanding the systems that shape our bodies, minds and deepest selves - and how we can undo them. Avoiding the News : reluctant audiences for journalism by Benjamin Toff; Ruth Palmer; Rasmus Kleis NielsenA small but growing number of people in many countries consistently avoid the news. They feel they do not have time for it, believe it is not worth the effort, find it irrelevant or emotionally draining, or do not trust the media, among other reasons. Why and how do people circumvent news? Which groups are more and less reluctant to follow the news? In what ways is news avoidance a problem-for individuals, for the news industry, for society-and how can it be addressed? This groundbreaking book explains why and how so many people consume little or no news despite unprecedented abundance and ease of access. Drawing on interviews in Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States as well as extensive survey data, Avoiding the News examines how people who tune out traditional media get information and explores their "folk theories" about how news organizations work. The authors argue that news avoidance is about not only content but also identity, ideologies, and infrastructures: who people are, what they believe, and how news does or does not fit into their everyday lives. Because news avoidance is most common among disadvantaged groups, it threatens to exacerbate existing inequalities by tilting mainstream journalism even further toward privileged audiences. Ultimately, this book shows, persuading news-averse audiences of the value of journalism is not simply a matter of adjusting coverage but requires a deeper, more empathetic understanding of people's relationships with news across social, political, and technological boundaries.

The Intelligence of Intuition by Gerd GigerenzerPeople often confuse intuition with a sixth sense or the arbitrary judgments of inept decision makers. In this book, Gerd Gigerenzer analyzes the war on intuition in the social sciences beginning with gendered perceptions of intuition as female, followed by opposition between biased intuition and logical rationality, popularized in two-system theories. Technological paternalism amplifies these views, arguing that human intuition should be replaced by perfect algorithms. In opposition to these beliefs, this book proposes that intuition is a form of unconscious intelligence based on years of experience that evolved to deal with uncertain and dynamic situations where logic and big data algorithms are of little benefit. Gigerenzer introduces the scientific study of intuition and shows that intuition is not irrational caprice but is instead based on smart heuristics. Researchers, students, and general readers with an interest in decision making, heuristics and biases, cognitive psychology, and behavioral public policy will benefit.
Themes, Issues and Debates in Psychology by Richard GrossThemes, Issues and Debates in Psychology presents an integrated view of Psychology by identifying underlying themes (such as the scientific nature of Psychology, cultural and gender differences), issues (ethical, methodological and conceptual), and debates (such as heredity vs. environment, free will vs. determinism, normality vs. abnormality) which permeate the discipline as a whole. The text adopts a critical approach to 'mainstream Psychology', attempting to identify and challenge some of the underlying assumptions that are traditionally made about 'human nature' and how it can be investigated in ways based on the scientific study of the natural world. What makes Psychology unique is the view of Psychologists as part of their own subject-matter: trying to study other people cannot be done by copying the methods of the physicist or chemist. Psychology draws on and brings together a number of different theories and methodologies from a wide range of other disciplines, including philosophy, biology, anthropology and sociology. Themes, Issues and Debates in Psychology also includes chapters on Parapsychology, Positive Psychology and Religion and Spirituality, which are rarely found together in a single text. Not only are these not mainstream, but they highlight some of the themes, issues and debates discussed in earlier chapters. The topics in this fifth edition of this book are inflected by a new concern with decolonizing the curriculum, and discussions of cultural and gender-based issues are integrated into all aspects of the text to offer a new and critical perspective on issues such as political and scientific colonialism. Additionally, the text features 'Question Time' breaks that relate to methodological, theoretical and other issues; these are all aimed at helping the reader assimilate the material. Some of the issues raised could form the basis of seminar papers/discussions. Themes, Issues and Debates in Psychology is ideal reading for all students and is relevant to undergraduate courses in psychology.

Antisemitism and Racism : Ethical challenges for psychoanalysis by Stephen Frosh; Esther Rashkin (Series edited by); Mari Ruti (Series edited by); Peter L. Rudnytsky (Series edited by)Psychoanalysis has not had a comfortable history in relation to "race" and racism, despite its origins in the Jewish lives of Freud and its other first-generation progenitors and the insistent pressure of antisemitism upon it. Indeed, the failure to fully address racism is a running sore in the psychoanalytic movement. This has begun to be remedied in recent years, but it is still the case that psychoanalysis struggles to incorporate antiracist perspectives and that this might be a reason why it has engaged relatively poorly with Black communities. Psychoanalysis may have been a "Jewish science" in a positive sense, but it has not fully leveraged this to become a truly antiracist one. In Antisemitism and Racism, Stephen Frosh, a leading figure in psychoanalytic studies, provides a psychoanalytically-informed examination of the relations between antisemitism and antiblack racism. Frosh's starting point is a claim that the Jewish origins and implications of psychoanalysis fuel its capacity to interrogate racism of all kinds. Indeed, the shared experience of exposure to different kinds of racism raises prospects for renewed alliances between Jewish and Black communities. Antisemitism and Racism ends with a chapter that asks psychoanalysis itself to respond to some of the challenges emerging from the Black Lives Matter and decolonial movements. At a time when division and prejudice are on the rise to an alarming degree, it is imperative that we examine, understand, and discuss the psychological roots of racism.
