Project Planning

Project planning is a must for successful execution of your digital scholarship project. This guide provides a short list of best practices, and a basic framework for digital scholars to follow. 

There are many free and easy to use project planning tools available to students and scholars. It is recommended that you create accounts and experiment with a variety of software to determine which will work best for you.

Project Planning Framework

Communication is critical to successful completion of your project.

  1. Scope - The first step in any project is to identify its scope - to define in detail the outcomes of the work.

  2. Timeline - The timeline of the project is the second step, and includes beginning and end dates as well as completionn dates.

  3. Tasks - Identifying participant roles and assigning tasks can be done when setting the timeline. 

  4. Budget - Some projects may involve a budget. ??

  5. Communication - Keeping lines of communication open between group members and their instructors is key to success.

Project Planning Software Platforms

All options here offer a free membership, but higher functionality is available through a paid subscription. Free memberships are more than adequate for small individual or group projects.

Smartsheet

Smartsheet is an online project management platform that provides a work space for collaboration as well as work management. that is developed and marketed by Smartsheet.com, Users can assign tasks, track project progress, manage calendars, and share documents.

Trello

Trello is a good choice for scholars who may respond positively to a more graphic presentation. This software utilizes boards with cards containing lists of project tasks.
