LING/ANTH 432 & 532: Sociolinguistics I: UW Libraries Search: Books

Guide to finding sources for Sociolinguistics I (LING/ANTH 432 & 532) coursework

Books and Ebooks

Books provide comprehensive coverage of topics, offering more depth than shorter articles. While reading an entire book may not be necessary for your research, books can be particularly valuable when studying influential linguists. You might find books written by them or scholarly works that analyze their contributions. Books can help you understand their theories, the reception of their work, and their lasting influence in sociolinguistics.

  • Broad Context – Books explore topics in greater detail, providing historical background, theoretical frameworks, and extensive analysis.
  • Focused Insights – Even if a book covers a broad subject, specific chapters or sections may directly address your linguist or their work.
  • Secondary Analysis – Books about scholars situate their contributions within the broader field, helping you understand their impact.

What to Look for in Books

When researching a sociolinguist in books, consider the following:

  • Scholarly Monographs – Books written by the linguist or about their work provide in-depth exploration of their theories, methods, and influence.
  • Festschrifts – Collected volumes honoring a scholar, often containing essays analyzing their contributions.
  • State-of-the-Field Books & Edited Volumes – These works often include chapters on major scholars and their influence on sociolinguistics.
  • Book Reviews in Collected Essays – Some retrospective collections include reviews and critiques of a scholar’s work.
  • Prefaces & Acknowledgments in Related Works – Books by former students or colleagues may reference a scholar’s influence.
