Mountaineering in the Pacific Northwest: Individuals

Lloyd Anderson was a founder of the Recreation Equipment Co-operative (REI). Anderson was an active mountain climber and a pioneer member of the Mountaineers. He also organized and headed the Climber's Group of the Mountaineers and set up climbing courses.

The papers of mountain climber Paul Billingsley are primarily in Nepali, with a typed translation and brief greeting by Gombu Sherpa, who was the partner of James B. Whittaker on the 1963 ascent of Mount Everest. A scrapbook contains newspaper and periodical stories, primarily about Northwest mountaineering.

These papers include Hult's writings about Lois and Herb Crisler and their relationship with the Olympic Mountains, c. 1930-2001. Original writings by Lois Crisler and photographs of the Crislers by E. Kassovitz are also included.

Richard Emerson was a sociologist and University of Washington faculty member. He was a member of the 1963 Mount Everest Expedition.

These papers contain ephemera and clippings, including a published interview with mountain climber Don Gordon about his climbs in the Cascade Mountains, and a letter to Cam Beckwith recounting his 1955 ascent of Mt. Robson via the Wishbone Glacier.

Hazard was an active mountaineer on the local, national, and international stages. His papers contain a typewritten manuscript and one letter from 1954. The manuscript, "Pacific Rim Adventure," traces the history of world mountaineering, ending at the Pacific Rim. The letter is a rejection notice from Doubleday with advice about getting the book published.

Josendal was a member of the Mountaineers and served as the club's vice president from 1952-1953, and was on its Board of Directors from 1954-1957. He was chairman of the Climbing Committee in 1950, the Safety Committee in 1956, and the Budget Committee in 1959. He participated in many other mountaineering activities.

Lawrence Denny Lindsley was born in 1878. He was the grandson of Seattle pioneer David Denny. Lindsley took up photography at an early age and combined it with work as a miner, hunter, guide, and student of nature. Lindsley was a charter member of the Mountaineers (1907) and was the official photographer for the Great Northern Railroad in Glacier National Park in 1916. He worked for Asahel Curtis in 1910 at the Roman Studios and, later, for Edward Curtis. He spent nine years at Lake Chelan, where he took extensive photographs of the North Cascades. Lindsey also worked as a wilderness guide for the Mountaineers and figured prominently as Silent Lawry, the guide in Mary Roberts Rinehart's book "Tenting Tonight."

Harvey H. Manning was a Northwest conservationist who held offices in the Mountaineers and in the North Cascades Conservation Council. He was primarily responsible for the publishing projects of the Mountaineers and was the chairman of the Literary Fund Committee for about ten years. Manning was also an officer of the Issaquah Alps Trails Club. Some records are stored off site and advanced notice is required for viewing.

Molenaar was an American mountaineer and author who wrote the definitive climbing history of Mount Rainier ("The Challenge of Rainier"). These papers include twelve of Molenaaar's climbing diaries ("Fuhrerbuchs"), correspondence, published landform-relief maps, black and white negatives of mountains and expeditions, and the unpublished manuscript "High and Wide with Sketchpad." Correspondence and questionnaires relating to Molenaar's research on the history of mountaineering on Mt. Rainier, circa 1930-1987, are also in these papers.

Harry M. Myers was one of the early climbers of Mount Rainier. He collected documentation of early ascents of the mountain, mainly between 1905-1935.

John Roper is a North Cascades mountain climber who grew up at Newhalem. This collection contains a letter, photographs, and a map recording Roper's first ascents on Backbone Ridge.

Everett Smith's "A Vacation on Mt. Rainier" describes his party's unsuccessful attempt, under the leadership of Edward Ingraham, to climb Mr. Rainier via the Carbon River and the Winthrop and Emmons Glaciers. A photocopy includes footnotes which clarify locations. Another item, "On Mt. Rainier, July 1887," is Agnes M. Greene's account of her party's unsuccessful attempt via the same route.

Tolmie was the first white man to attempt to climb Mt. Rainier, and recorded his expedition in his journal. A copy of this journal entry is in this accession in Box 2, Folder 6

Trumbull made the first ascent of the Brothers in 1912. His account of Wilderness Hikes, along with his photograph album, provides documentation of his trip. His papers also include a diary and an expense record of climbing trips in the Cascade Pass area and Mt. Constance.

Robert Boyd Walkinshaw (1884-1963) was an author, lawyer, mountaineer, and local historian. He was also a a member of the Rainier Club. Mountaineering information can be found in Box 3, Folders 25-34 and Box 5, Folder 1.

Watson was a Seattle-based alpine enthusiast and photographer. As an avocation Watson skied, hiked, and climbed in the Cascade and Olympic Mountains. In retirement he corresponded with former outdoor companions and with others interested in the alpine history of Washington State. These papers include general correspondence, writings, ephemera, maps, snapshots, and other material primarily concerning mountaineering and photography in the North Cascades area of Washington State from 1970-1990.

Arthur Churchill Warner, a photographer and mountaineer, was born in 1864 and died in 1943. He was a professional photographer and, in 1888, was the first to photograph the summit of Mt. Rainier. This collection includes correspondence concerning John Muir and an account of the ascent of Mt. Rainier in 1888.

George Welch was an early hiker in the Olympic Mountains. These papers include research notes and writings related to a projected publication about George Welch.

Winn was on the Board of Trustees of the Mountaineers from 1985 to 1986. He chaired the Mountaineers' Conservation Division from 1988 to 1990, and then served an additional term as chair of the Mountaineers Conservation Division from 1998 to December 2001. He was not on the Mountaineers Board of Directors during this second term as chair. Winn was also president of the Washington Wilderness Coalition from 1990 until January 1993. He was a president of the Mountaineers, served on the Mountaineers Books Management Board in 1982, and was on Mountaineers committees to find a new club room (1981, 1983) and to deal with its operational problems. Winn chaired a Mountaineer committee to investigate a fatal accident during a Mountaineer scramble of Sluiskin Squaw on October 14, 1978. At this time, he was apparently given a file on the July 13, 1969 fatal accident involving a Mountaineers climbing party on Mr. Rainier.
