Mountaineering in the Pacific Northwest: Organizations

Crystal Mountain Skiers, a private ski club incorporated in the State of Washington, was founded in 1965. Membership was limited to 40 households. The club built a lodge on the east side of Crystal Mountain Highway, on property owned by the U.S. Forest Service.

Harvey H. Manning was a Northwest conservationist who held offices in the Mountaineers and in the North Cascades Conservation Council. He was primarily responsible for the publishing projects of the Mountaineers and was the chairman of the Literary Fund Committee for about ten years. Manning was also an officer of the Issaquah Alps Trails Club. Some records are stored off site and advanced notice is required for viewing.

This collection contains correspondence, notes, government reports, clippings, ephemera, financial records, publicity, maps, and aerial photographs documenting interest in the protection of Cougar and Tiger Mountains and Issaquah trail areas. Also included are schedules and route information of a "Mountain to Sound hike" formed in 1990 to publicize the greenway paralleling Interstate 90 east of Seattle. Records in this collection include early organizing documents, officers' files, business meeting documents, policies, committee files, publications, correspondence, membership and officer directories, newsletters, meeting minutes, applications submitted for membership in the organization, research files, multimedia, clippings about search and rescue missions, and other materials relating to the national Mountain Rescue Association. The Mountain Rescue Association records also include materials from its predecessor organization (Mountain Rescue and Safety Council) and other organizations such as the Alpine Club of Canada, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the Mountaineers, and the National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR).

Mountain Safety Research Inc. is a Seattle camping equipment firm that encourages the conservation of nature. Materials in this collection include mail order catalogs and newsletters.

This accession includes Lloyd Anderson's "History of Recreational Equipment, Inc. - a cooperative" (1980), which traces the development of REI from earliest days of Climbers' Group in 1934 to 1980. Invoices in Box 2 show mountaineering orders from the late 1930s and 1940s.
