Campus Library FAQ: How do I access the New York Times (and more)?

Direct Access to Newspaper Websites

UW Libraries provides current UW and Cascadia students with direct access to some newspaper websites (currently The Atlantic, The Economist, Financial Times, New York Times, and Wall Street Journal.

1. Go to Direct Access to Newspaper Websites and click on the newspaper title that interests you.

2. Follow the instructions for accessing that newspaper website. In most cases you will need to register for a free individual subscriber account in order to get full direct access to the newspaper website.

3. Once you set up your account, you can go directly to the newspapers' sites to read their articles and avoid encountering paywalls.

Tip: If you are logged in as a subscriber, there will sometimes be an option that says something like “share as a gift” or “gift unlocked article.” This should generate a link that you can share with non-subscribers. Gift links may expire after a certain time period, currently New York Times gift links expire in 30 days.

Access News through Library Databases

If the newspaper is not one on the direct access to newspaper websites list, or you prefer to use library databases, go to UW Libraries e-Journals and search for the name of the newspaper publication, for example, “Washington Post.” Try to find a library record that shows the resource type is "newspaper" and is available online.
